Use ordinary salted or pickled herring. Soak, clean and fillet the herrings and cut the fillets slantwise into pieces. Slice the onion thin. Lay the herring in layers with the onion, dill and spices. Mix the vinegar, sugar and water. Bring the pickle to a boil and cool. Pour over the herring. Serve at breakfast or supper, or for dinner with hot potatoes.
